Reading an IGI certificate

Every Iveraco diamond arrives with a certificate from the International Gemological Institute. The four grades on it are the ones everybody knows, but the certificate says more than that.

The four Cs

Cut is the only grade a person controls, and it is the one that decides how much light the stone returns. Colour runs from D, colourless, down the alphabet. Clarity describes inclusions under ten times magnification. Carat is weight, not size.

The inscription

Near the bottom is a number. The same number is laser-inscribed on the girdle of the stone, too small to see without a loupe. Match the two and you know the certificate belongs to this diamond and no other.
